A new wave of foreclosures is affecting areas of the country not previously hard-hit by the mortgage crisis. USA Today reports that these foreclosures are different from the foreclosures at the beginning of the mortgage crisis in 2007. Instead of being caused by risky subprime lending, the recent increase in foreclosures is due to rising unemployment. In the ongoing economic recession, more and more people are losing their jobs and are unable to keep up with their mortgage payments.
To learn more about how unemployment is affecting the housing market, you can read the entire article HERE. If you or someone you know is facing foreclosure, contact a HUD-certified counselor. To find one, call United Way’s 2-1-1 referral service at (800) 427-4626. 2-1-1 can also connect you with resources and information about employment, food, health care, counseling, and other services.

Today the St. Louis Post-Dispatch published an article about the increasing number of people who are volunteering while they’re unemployed. It’s a great way to feel good and help others, to keep your skills sharp, and to network if you’re unemployed or not getting as many hours as you’d like. A few St. Louis residents who shared their volunteer stories were actually able to find work due to the connections they made while volunteering.

Here’s the video for Week 5 of my career search! With graduation only about 4 weeks away, the days seem to be going faster and faster, but I’m still doing everything I can to secure a position following graduation.
A couple weeks ago I visited Staffing Solutions, Inc., a local placement firm in St. Louis, to interview them about the St. Louis job market. It was a great opportunity because they had some fantastic suggestions for job seekers like me.
